Free .mcp.json / MCP config builder for Claude Code
Claude Code connects to external tools through MCP servers. Project teams share them in a .mcp.json file at the repository root; you can also keep personal servers under the mcpServers key in ~/.claude.json. Fill in the form to generate either file shape, plus the matching claude mcp add / claude mcp add-json commands.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Your config
Equivalent CLI commands
Paste these into a terminal outside a Claude session. After --, everything is the server command (stdio only).
How to use it
- Project scope: save the JSON as
.mcp.jsonin the project root (not inside.claude/). Commit it if the team should share the servers. - User scope: merge the
mcpServersobject into~/.claude.json(or run the CLI with--scope user). On Windows that file is%USERPROFILE%\.claude.json. - Restart: Claude Code reads MCP config at session start. Exit and start a new session after editing the file.
- Approve project servers: the first time Claude Code sees a project-scoped server it asks you to approve it (so a cloned repo can't launch processes without consent). Approve the prompt, or run
/mcplater. - Check status: inside a session run
/mcp; from the shell runclaude mcp listorclaude mcp get <name>. - HTTP vs SSE: prefer
type: "http"for remote servers. SSE is deprecated; use it only when a service still exposes SSE only.streamable-httpis accepted as an alias forhttp. - URL needs a type: an entry with a
urlbut notypeis treated as stdio and skipped. Always settypetohttp, sseorwsfor remote servers. - Server names: letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only (Claude Code rejects other characters).
- Secrets: put API keys in
envorheaderswith${VAR}/${VAR:-default}expansion rather than committing real tokens to a shared.mcp.json.

After you connect servers that can send or post, pair this with the hooks & settings.json generator so outbound MCP tools ask or deny before they fire.
